The short answer

What this treatment is

A comprehensive hearing assessment is a 60-minute diagnostic appointment that establishes exactly how you hear and why. It includes a full case history, otoscopy, pure tone audiometry with air and bone conduction, tympanometry and speech testing where appropriate. Results are explained on the day, and you leave with a personalised plan.
A comprehensive hearing assessment under way at Clearly Hearing

At your first appointment we take the time to find out what is really going on.

Appointments are longer here by design. Your audiologist takes a full history, examines your ears, and runs the tests your situation actually calls for, going beyond standard pure tone audiometry where needed.

Results are explained clearly on the day, and you leave with a personalised plan: whether that is treatment, monitoring, a referral, or the reassurance that your hearing is normal.

A comprehensive hearing assessment can help to:

Explain what has changed

The assessment maps your hearing precisely: which pitches are affected, by how much, and whether the cause sits in the ear canal, the middle ear or the inner ear. Clear answers come before any recommendation.

Catch reversible causes early

Not all hearing loss is permanent. Wax, infection and middle ear fluid all reduce hearing and all respond to treatment. Otoscopy and tympanometry identify these conductive causes so nothing treatable is missed.

Make sense of difficulty hearing in noise

Struggling to follow speech in background noise, even when a basic hearing test looks normal, is common, especially in teenagers and younger people. Speech testing explores this properly, and can point towards an APD assessment where the pattern fits.

Support referrals, schools and insurers

You receive your results explained on the day, and we provide written reports for GPs, ENT consultants, schools and private medical insurers where needed, so the next step is straightforward.

Reassure you when hearing is normal

Sometimes the most valuable outcome is a thorough all-clear. If your hearing is normal, we say so plainly, explain what we checked, and advise on protecting your hearing and when to re-test.

What can be treated?

One thorough assessment sits at the start of almost every concern we see, from gradual hearing loss to a child who seems not to be listening.

Once again I am truly grateful for Dayna's expertise. Again, £75.00 well spent. Dayna is still the calm, friendly, kind and skilled professional she was when I last saw her. I am always apprehensive about the process of ear microsuction but I needn't have been. The procedure was comfortable and pain free. The results are great.

The audiologist who treated me was absolutely top drawer. Her name was Dayna and she gave me an appointment the same day and removed a considerable amount of wax from both of my ears using microsuction.

FAQs

Do I need a GP referral for a hearing assessment?

No. You can book directly online, by phone or on WhatsApp, and same-day appointments are often possible. If you are claiming through private medical insurance, check your policy first, as some insurers require a GP referral. We are registered providers for Bupa, AXA, Aviva, WPA, Vitality and Healix.

What happens during the assessment?

Allow around 60 minutes. Your audiologist takes a full case history, examines your ears with otoscopy, then runs pure tone audiometry with air and bone conduction, tympanometry and speech testing where appropriate. Results are explained in plain English on the day, and you leave with a personalised plan.

How is this different from a free high-street hearing check?

Free checks are usually a brief screening designed to lead into a hearing aid recommendation. Ours is a 60-minute diagnostic appointment that goes beyond standard pure tone audiometry, adding middle ear assessment and speech testing where appropriate. Because we are independent, you get evidence-based advice, not a quota to fill.

Can you test my child's hearing?

Yes. Children's hearing tests start from £90 and use age-appropriate methods: video otoscopy, tympanometry, play audiometry and Visual Reinforcement Audiometry. Parents stay in the room throughout. If results point to glue ear or another middle ear problem, we explain what we found and what should happen next.

What happens if the assessment finds hearing loss?

You will not be rushed into anything. We explain the type and degree of hearing loss, the likely cause, and your realistic options: treatment, monitoring, onward referral, or hearing technology. Any recommendation is independent, drawn from seven manufacturers where hearing aids are appropriate, and every fitting is verified with Real Ear Measurement.
